Explore the newly reopened National Portrait Gallery on a tour led by the architect behind its transformation, Jamie Fobert.

Join us on 17 August for for a closer look at recently renovated National Portrait Gallery. Led by Jamie Fobert Architects, alongside heritage architects Purcell, the project involved a complete refurbishment and reconsideration of the Grade I listed building, restoring many historic features and revealing hidden areas, including a Victorian terrazzo floor.

The tour will offer an in-depth look at a range of architectural interventions, from a new public forecourt, which leads to a generous entry hall, to the creation of a dynamic new learning centre. The project has also revealed areas inside the building that have been hidden for decades.

The tour will start at 4pm on Thursday 17 August, beginning at the Henry Irving statue outside the main entrance (or inside in the first hall if it's raining)

TOUR GUIDES:

Jamie Fobert

Jamie studied architecture in his native Canada at the University of Toronto. He arrived in London in 1988 and began working for David Chipperfield Architects, when it was a team of 7 working from a small room at the back of the 9H Gallery. During his 8 years there, Jamie oversaw the set-up of a new office, DCA Berlin. Then, in 1996, he founded his own practice, Jamie Fobert Architects.

Today, the practice has grown to be an outstanding team designing projects of significant scale, such as Tate St Ives and the National Portrait Gallery. Jamie lectures and teaches widely, has a deep involvement in the arts, and was appointed Commander of the Order of the British Empire in 2020. He is a Trustee of Camden Arts Centre and the Architecture Foundation.
