Beginning with the landmark Millennium Dome, the Greenwich Peninsula has been transformed from an industrial wasteland into a new residential, entertainment, educational and commercial district.

Five years ago developer Knight Dragon acquired the district and is now building out a towering £8.4 billion masterplan by Allies and Morrison. At its centre will be the medina-inspired Design District – conceived by Assemblage and featuring 16 buildings designed by eight different architects including Mole Architects, Adam Khan Architects, 6a Architects, David Kohn Architects and Architecture 00.

Peter Besley is director of Assemblage and worked alongside Allies and Morrison on the overall masterplan for Greenwich Peninsula. The practice – co-founded with Hannah Corlett – specialises in masterplanning, residential, educational and civic architecture and has turned its talents to a variety of projects at different scales across the UK, United States and Middle East. Assemblage won an international contest for a new £620 million Iraqi Parliament complex in Baghdad in 2012.
