The Architecture Foundation has partnered with Gallions Housing Association to select four design teams to participate in a series of honorarium-supported design workshops focusing on The Moorings Housing Estate in Thamesmead. Dallas Pierce Quintero, Jan Kattein Architects, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects with The Brick Box and What if: Projects have been selected via an open call process to take part in the workshops that will generate fresh thinking and low cost design-led solutions for enhancing resident's experience of the estate between Carlyle Road and their front doors. The design teams will now take part in three workshops including a site visit, a stakeholder meeting and a final public presentation to generate new ideas for the estate. Should the final proposals be deemed suitable and economically feasible Gallions Housing Association are keen to look into realising a number of the proposed ideas.
The Moorings currently presents residents and visitors with a warren of underused spaces and neglected corners. The relationship between the surrounding streets and the internal residential spaces is hard to decipher and a lack of memorable features makes navigation within the estate difficultand at times counter intuitive. It is envisaged that through three targeted workshops, design-led solutions can be proposed to address some of the key challenges currently facing the Estate and its users.
Workshops will take place throughout October with final ideas to be presented in November.
