Musicity

Tues 19 April 2011 6.00pm

  • David Adjaye and Peter Adjaye presentation
  • Live music from Ski Oakenfull and Palmskin Productions, performing reconstructed versions of all seven Musicity tracks
  • Panel discussion with Peter Adjaye, David Adjaye, Dr Michael Bull and Paul Morley, chaired by Vicky Richardson

A unique online platform, founded and curated by DJ Nick Luscombe of Flomotion and creative strategist Simon Jordan (Jump Studios), Musicity seeks to encourage people to explore the city musically, architecturally and experientially by commissioning musicians to compose original tracks in response to a building, site or piece of the city that inspires them. The artists' recordings can then only be heard by physically visiting these locations and streaming the tracks through a purpose built smart phone app - making urban exploration a vital component of the musical experience - the ‘transaction' necessary to hear the artist's direct responses to the built environment.

This exciting informal evening of live performance, DJs, conversation and drinks sought to explore the ways in which artistic expression can be used to bring a new dimension to the way we experience cities and the world around us - from the unique central London vantage point of the AF's rooftop Skyroom. Featuring a discussion chaired by Vicky Richardson (Director of Architecture, Design and Fashion, British Council) between architect David Adjaye, Peter Adjaye (David's musician brother and frequent sonic collaborator on buildings and exhibitions), Dr Michael Bull (author, Sound Moves: iPod Culture and Urban Experience) and journalist, Art of Noise member and frequent Newsnight Review commentator, Paul Morley.

Plus discussion and musical contributions from Musicity artists Ski Oakenfull and Palmskin Productions - who performed a live set featuring reconstructed versions of all seven Musicity tracks with special visuals created especially for the night, alongside a DJ set from Nick Luscombe.
