Farshid Moussavi presented the recently completed £44m John Lewis department store and adjoining Cineplex in Leicester. The Cineplex is a large blank volume is clad in stainless steel shingle. Departing from the conventional opaque retail box, the department store design explores a layered transparency that allows visual interaction between the interior and the city outside. This innovation and disregard for the prevailing conventions is characteristic of the internationally acclaimed and widely exhibited practice whose previous designs have included Yokohama International Port Terminal and the BBC Music Centre in White City, London.
