London Docklands Development Corporation invited teams of engineers and architects to submit designs for bridges at West India Quay and Canary Wharf South Quay. The two winning entries were by engineers Jan Bobrowski & Partners and Chris Wilkinson Architects at Canary Wharf South Quay, and Future System Architects with engineers Anthony Hunt Associates at West India Quay. The bridges were completed in 1998.

All shortlisted designs were shown alongside the winning schemes at The Architecture Foundation's exhibition Building Bridges (December-February), which then subsequently toured to Canary Wharf (April-May 1995) and the Design Centre in Tokyo, Japan (October-December 1995).
