Book Week: A walk from here to an other - Mark Pimlott
The first film in the 2024 Book Week features Mark Pimlott, who discusses his recent book ' A walk from here to an other'.
Mark Pimlott is an artist, architectural designer and teacher. His work in photography, film, installation, interior and public art attempts to make the specific characteristics of places visible and available to new uses and understandings. Imagined as a conversation with a young architect, the book meanders between text and photographs - focussing on the act of looking, interpreting and percieiving at the beginning of a project.
"This book is offered to young artists, and young architects, in particular. It concerns ways of approaching how one might begin, and so, inevitably, is about the idea of beginnings, about one’s place in the world, about conditions that one finds oneself in confrontation with, the ideas within those conditions and their effects on those subject to them. It is by no means a thorough or encyclopaedic discussion. Rather, it is a personal rumination shared with the reader, derived from experience and a practice that has been, frankly, wayward, moving from architecture to art – sculpture, painting, video, photography – to art in public environments, and back to architecture and interiors; and writing about all of these. It is also an implicit reflection on the matter of teaching, which, in my case, has been buffeted by encounters along the meandering paths of my own practice."
