Dallas Pierce Quintero, Jan Kattein Architects, Sarah Wigglesworth Architects with The Brick Box and What if: Projects have been shortlisted to take part in The Architecture Foundation's The Moorings: Street to Doorstep project. Commissioned by Gallions Housing Association this project offers architecture-led teams the chance to partake in a series of honorarium-supported design workshops focusing on The Moorings housing estate in Thamesmead, South East London.
The Moorings currently presents residents and visitors with a warren of underused spaces and neglected corners. The relationship between the surrounding streets and the internal residential spaces is hard to decipher and a lack of memorable features makes navigation within the estate difficult and at times counter intuitive. It is envisaged that through three targeted workshops, design-led solutions can be proposed to address some of the key challenges currently facing the Estate and its users.
Selected via an open call process the shortlisted teams will be asked to identify and propose potential solutions to issues relating to The Moorings, a 1960s-built housing complex, consisting of over 1,200 dwellings. The workshops will consist of a site visit, a stakeholder meeting and a final public presentation. It is hoped that a select number of proposals will be implemented as a result of the workshops along side the improvement works Gallions are currently carrying out on site.
