Sauter von Moos is an architecture studio established in Basel by Charotte von Moos and Florian Sauter in 2001. Recently the practice has moved to Miami where both directors teach at the University of Miami School of Architecture.
The practice works across all scales, both in theory and practice. In 'House with a Tree' (2013) the studio gently refurbished an old house with micro additions, whilst also embedding modern sustainable technologies. There is a constant dialogue between the embedded history of the existing structure and the new elements, each mutually activating the presence and character of the other.
More recently, the practice collaborated with Herzog de Meuron on the renovation of another historic structure, the Villa Hammer (2018). The disused building was subtly overhauled internally and externally with the addition of a new building to the rear. The two structures now sit in a critical dialogue as part of new finely tuned environment that enhances the original spatial identity of the site.
